Much like religious converts, emigrés to music capitals often outdo their native counterparts in showing devotion for the customs of their adopted homes. In the case of New Orleans quintet Galactic, however, what began as slavish reverence for The Meters quickly developed into a visionary, multifaceted approach to Crescent City sounds. Eighteen years later, Galactic continues to search for new ways to weave funk’s well-trodden primary ingredients into a delightfully vibrant and fresh-sounding stew. With a revolving roster of special guests — this time including Living Colour’s Corey Glover and Corey Henry of the Rebirth Brass Band — Galactic now operates as a kind of transcontinental revue exporting New Orleans to the rest of the world while absorbing new influences in the process. Ever forward-moving, Galactic’s work suggests a future where New Orleans rhythms will, in an endless array of permutations, inhabit the cultural DNA of each person on earth.
