Gabrahm Vitek w/Ella Riot & more

When: Fri., April 15, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $7
Michelle Chamuel's confident vocals make Ella Riot an exemplary modern disco group whose big hooks, stop-and-start rhythms and post-gospel melodies combine for perfect pop. The Ann Arbor, Mich., band recently changed its name from My Dear Disco, but Ella Riot seems devoted to playing real disco — although such tunes as "Karma" and "Madame Eon" sport trace elements of house music along with an undertone of jazz. Their shimmering keyboards recall such titans of light entertainment as Dexter Wansel and Massive Attack. Still, Chamuel's voice rides easily on top of the group's imaginative grooves — not for nothing is disco a genre of fierce divas and insane optimism. The band's new EP Love Child contains plenty of super-catchy moments, and they get the attitude exactly right: "It could be you and me / I'm doing fine in the meantime," they sing in "It Could Be."
