If the mayor’s office and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are still looking for ammunition to use in selling the Music City Center — our behemoth of a new convention center that has swallowed six city blocks whole — to the public, they don’t need to look much further than this rumble in the urban dork jungle. Not only does the weekend of April 6 mark the occasion of the annual Middle Tennessee Anime Convention but also, in the exact same building for the exact same days, the Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival. Both in their 13th year, they cohabit a weekend that will almost assuredly end in a Hunger Games kill-or-be-killed scenario. In one corner, MTAC’s celebrates all things otaku with a lineup of guests including Asian-American rap trio Notorious MSG, Japanese active rockers Head Phones President, and Power Ranger turned MMA fighter (no, really) Jason David Frank, several DJs, a handful of voice actors and more. Which is all well and good, but no match for the inclusion of Kaiju Big Battel, the astonishingly weird combo of pro-wrestling, luchadores and Godzilla. Meanwhile, it an entirely separate part of the Nashville Convention Center, the Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival brings together the Midstate’s community of budding Rob Zombies for three days of blood, guts and tattoo ink. The festival features guests like Norman Reedus (of Walking Dead fame), KISS’ Ace Frehley, wrestler Diamond Dallas Page, and a slew of miscellaneous zombies, slasher victims, tattoo artists and small-time filmmakers. Both cons share a few things in common: presentations, contests, films, a metric shit ton of things to buy and have signed. But can they come together? Or will Diamond Dallas Page fight Steam-Powered Tentacle Boulder? We can only hope.
