Freak Like Tennessee

When: Tue., Dec. 21, 8 p.m. and Wed., Dec. 22, 8 p.m. 2010
Two Tennessee natives, Sara Cravens (Cookeville) and Jeny Batten (Hendersonville), knew each other years ago at UT Knoxville. After going their separate ways — Batten to New York City and the standup comedy route, Cravens to Los Angeles doing voiceovers and training at the famous Groundlings Theater — a chance meeting in 2008 in Nashville brought the ladies together again, and a comedy duo was born. In their two-woman show, they take turns breathing life into characters inspired by the Volunteer State experience, in a mix of onstage antics and multimedia sketches that also highlight residing in La La Land, where they still manage to embrace the life lessons learned in good ol’ Rocky Top. Billed as “down-home humor with sharp tongues and hearts of gold,” this might be a surprisingly entertaining non-holiday-themed comic diversion, performed on two weeknights in the run-up to Christmas Eve. Direction is by Phyllis Katz.
