Neighborhoods offer holiday shopping alternatives

Just the thought of entering the Mall Zone during the holidaze is enough to make a person start hyperventilating. That’s why the street celebrations being staged by two pedestrian-friendly retail neighborhoods sound so appealing.

12 South is the name given to the area that runs along 12th Avenue South from Linden to Cedar; it is also the name of the 30-member merchants’ association that has formed to unify and market that burgeoning strip of shops, restaurants and services. On Thursday, Dec. 12, from 5-9 p.m., the neighborhood presents its second “12th on 12th” open house. Many of the businesses are extending their hours and offering special discounts and promotions. For example, Harb’s Oriental Rugs will be giving away a rug to a lucky shopper, Portland Brew coffee shop will be offering 25 percent off gift baskets ordered that night, and Serendipity women’s clothing store is having a special sale. Zion Church will have carolers on the street, and many establishments will serve complimentary beverages and snacks.

On Dec. 12 and 13, Hillsboro Village is holding its own Holiday Open House. All merchants on 21st Avenue South between Acklen and Wedgewood will stay open until 9 p.m. and will be offering sales, promotions and food and beverage samples. Provence Bakery & Café will unveil its new hot chocolate, made with melted Callebaut chocolate and topped with handcrafted artisan marshmallows.
