Floating Action w/Cotton Jones & James Wallace and the Naked Light

When: Fri., Aug. 8, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
As Asheville, N.C.’s Seth Kauffman and his group Floating Action get ready to release their new LP, Body Questions, I’d like to pause in appreciation of their five previous albums, which are all pretty easy to love. Their update on psychedelic pop, exemplified nicely in the new single “Unrevenged,” is right in the middle of a Venn diagram comprising Dr. Dog, The Flaming Lips and Spoon: familiar enough to lure you into the groove almost without thinking, but with enough unique twists and unexpected mind-altering flourishes that you’ll never get bored. Cotton Jones’ recent records draw a little more from Americana, and their recently re-released EP Rio Ranger has a lush, almost countrypolitan luster, while James Wallace and The Naked Light’s More Strange News From Another Star has a distinctive, danceable shuffle that touches on a wide range of folk traditions. Both groups share Floating Action’s left-field approach, and that makes them the perfect support acts. STEPHEN
