Purists often decry the pop influence on contemporary country music. But those electric fiddles and hip-hop collaborations have roots over 30 years old. Crossover success is nothing new. It’s easy to forget that one of the most important roles for Golden Age acts like Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash and Tammy Wynette was ambassadorship for what had begun as a region-specific style. Pop! Goes the Country, hosted by Ralph Emery, celebrated — sometimes controversially — the budding relationship between the pop and country genres. However dated, it was totally ahead of its time.
