Fiddler on the Roof

When: June 8-July 8 2012
Now operating with a new Thursday through Sunday schedule, Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre — Nashville’s old reliable standby for that classic entertainment experience — helps celebrate 45 years in business with a big spring/summer musical. It’s certainly a familiar one. With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joseph Stein, Fiddler is derived from the stories of Sholom Aleichem. Set in czarist Russia at the turn of the 20th century, the play centers on one of the great characters in musical history: Tevye, a father of five daughters who finds himself at a crossroads where his family and Jewish traditions meet the encroaching outside world. The songs might be even more famous than the lead character: “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” etc. Direction is by the always multitasking Martha Wilkinson, with musical direction by Jaclyn Brown and choreography by Holly Shepherd. Barn regular Derek Whittaker — fresh off his strong performance as Mushnik in Tennessee Rep’s Little Shop of Horrors — seems very well cast as Tevye, and the supporting ensemble features experienced players such as Erica Cantrell, Liz Kalota, Amanda Lamb, Zack McCann, Jennifer Richmond and Will Sevier, with Anwen Wilkerson as the fiddler and Debbie Kraski as Golde.
