Fall Guide: Fashion

NAKED WITHOUT US FASHION MARKET
NOV. 14-15,
MAI,125 12th AVENUE

Word on the threadbare street is not only are fashion mags collecting dust on newsstands, this season's collective September issues—known for their monstrous pages of glossy heft—actually weigh about seven pounds less this year as compared to last. (Hey—just like the models they employ.) So why not make your September Issue deciding where to shift that magazine allowance for a local boost? After all, Nashville designers and fashion-minded folks are collaborating more than ever this season to bring you sleek designs from the near, here and dear.

Take Naked Without Us, the rock-meets-fashion duo of Billings Gemmill and Patrick Weber, better known for merging dance-rock and local threads at music venues around town and recently at SXSW. This year, they host a fashion market at nightclub Mai featuring some 20 local designers (and a few coastal imports). Familiar faces such as Local Honey owner and White Rabbit label designer Shea Steele and Shannon Lea will sell their latest pieces. Steele says to expect "some heavier fabrics, rich colors, and dramatic details," and Lea says her work has taken a seasonal turn for the darker and more dramatic as well. Toss in a few prizes, drink specials, a photo booth and some notable faces, and it's like our very own Fashion Week(end). Free.

• Sept. 18: Humankind Grand Opening Money, schmoney. Husband and wife team Christina and Ryan Rado opened nonprofit thriftstore Humankind in the basement of The Anchor to raise funds to provide much-needed school uniforms to refugee children in Nashville schools. Tonight celebrates an upgrade to a more visible storefront in East Nashville. Featuring musical performances from cause-minded musicians such as Joel D. Dahl, The Hardy Boys and Kacey Musgraves, the event starts 6:30 p.m. at 604 Gallatin Avenue.

• Sept. 19: Fanny's Choice East Nashville Vintage Sale Vintage scavengers know the art of collecting interesting pieces means hoofing it all over the city to out-of-the-way treasure troves. Vintage boutique owner Libby Callaway has made it a personal mission to bring local vintage dealers together for a synergistic power-up. The third annual event features goods from Closet Case Vintage, Local Honey, The Gilded Cage, Parlour Vintage and more. The action starts 10 a.m. at the corner of Holly and 11th, next to Bongo Java. Free.

• Sept. 26: Fashion for Every BODY
If you've ever complained about emaciated models and unrealistic beauty standards, this fundraising awards show—where regular people with human figures model the latest styles from local boutiques—is your catharsis. Presented by Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee, featuring country artist Emily West as host. It's at the Commodore Ballroom, 310 25th Ave. S.
