With a giant like Nordstrom entering our market, local boutiques carrying designer items, and up-and-coming local designers joining the scene — not to mention the first run with our own Nashville Fashion week — major trends are starting to surface here sooner rather than later. And the growth of the local fashion blogging scene is helping provide up-to-date and current trend information, thanks to sites like Stella Shops, Zarna's Runway, Style Blueprint and Nashville Fashion Blog, just to name a few. Here is a quick recap of some of fall 2011 trends trickling into local boutiques:
Those '70s-era bell-bottoms, bold bright colors, chunky clogs and stacked wedges.
Polka-dot patterns in blouses, skirts, and leg-wear/tights.
Menswear-inspired trends for women: pencil skirts, collared silk or chiffon blouses accessorized with skinny ties, scarves or bow ties. Short ruffled socks or knee-high socks, paired with a wedge, a heel, or a short bootie completing the ensemble.
Feminine '40s-inspired structured dresses with contouring waistline silhouettes
Furs, leopard prints and leather
Mixing and matching prints: dots with florals, stripes with plaids, etc.
Jewelry statements, accessorizing consistently within collections.
These all can become staple items. Intermingling any piece into your collection and flaunting your individual style while combining it with a fashion-forward statement is key. And don't forget to check out your favorite blogs to get current trend updates. —PRIYA MANI
