EVANGELICALS W/DRESSY BESSY

Borrowing as much from the experimental electro-pop of Brooklyn's dance club underground as the psych-rock tradition of their hometown of Norman, Okla., Evangelicals offer up a uniquely bittersweet hybrid of ethereal dance-trance and The Flaming Lips' circus-act playfulness. With perhaps one of 2008's best music videos for the fatally nostalgic single "Midnight Vignette," and a handful of eerily lovable tracks from this year's The Evening Descends, this foursome may at times fall prey to their own overtly weird tendencies, but all in all they conjure up a unique and inviting voice. Openers Dressy Bessy may have been fighting for the indie crowd's affections for the better part of a decade—with the help of a few members from The Apples in Stereo for some needed club cred—but they're going to have their hands full if they expect to christen the stage for these newcomers.
