Ernie Evans and the Florida State Bluegrass Band

When: Thu., Aug. 30, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $12
Florida’s contributed a lot to bluegrass music, most notably in the realm of fiddling. Original bluegrass fiddle man Chubby Wise came from Florida, as did occasional Rocky Top X-Presser David Crow and studio ace Aubrey Haynie, to name but a few. Yet the state’s not really known for its bluegrass bands, so it’s kind of neat that frontman Ernie Evans has put together a promising group that focuses on giving fresh tweaks to classic material, and also leans on another fine violinist who’s just moved to Nashville — the FSBB’s Nate Lee. Sure, he’s originally from Texas, but Lee follows in the grand Florida tradition by melding swing, blues and contest-style fiddling into a satisfying and fully formed individual style — and to top it off, he can pick a mean mandolin, too.
