Eric Gales w/Bart Walker Band

When: Thu., Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m. 2012
There are legions of naturally left-handed guitarists who learned to play right-handed (myself included) because they were taught by right-handed folks or learned on their friends’ right-handed guitars. Eric Gales is the rare right-handed person who plays lefty. (His brother taught him that way.) Not to mention that he plays a right-handed guitar turned upside-down, with the low E string on the bottom (like Albert King, one of Gales’ early influences). Unorthodox approach aside, the Memphis musician is a bona fide badass, capturing the the blues passion of King and the psychedelic fury of Hendrix much the same way Stevie Ray Vaughan did. Some of Gales’ recent recordings lean a little too much toward metal and prog for my tastes, but when he just throws down on the blues, he’s exceptional. Nashvillian Bart Walker is another formidable bluesman also influenced by Hendrix and Vaughan, and he’s got a mean slide in his arsenal too. If the two get onstage together, hold onto your seats. The performance is a preview of a weekly blues series that will begin Thursday, Jan. 10, at The Studio Gallery at Fontanel.
