Empire Recors Soundtrack Tribute at Mercy Lounge

Fake Empire

Fake Empire
In the annals of questionable judgment, paying tribute to 1995’s grunge-sploitation teeny-bopper flick Empire Records has to rank near the top. Sure, the movie is chock full of alterna-classics like The Ass Ponys’ “Little Bastard,” but the actual OST album is a great reminder of how bland mid-’90s “mainstream alternative” was. Are Nashville’s retro-loving hipsters really interested in hearing a half-assed Toad the Wet Sprocket cover? Does anybody even know who the Ape Hangers are? If they were covering the Clerks soundtrack, at least we all could have sung along with “Chewbacca.” What a Wookiee!
