Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer

Featuring work of freelance photog Alfred Wertheimer, Elvis at 21 captures the King of Rock ’n’ Roll at the very beginning of his tenure at RCA. Hired to take a few promo snaps of the man who would be King, Wertheimer followed his instincts and tagged along with the singer after the assignment, capturing the young man in candid moments that are all the more powerful in retrospect, knowing the firestorm of fame, fortune, drugs, guns, girls, karate and peanut-butter-banana-and-bacon sandwiches that guy in the pictures is about to endure. A pic of Presley playfully French-kissing a fan backstage is a classic rock image that reflects Wertheimer’s unique take on when to snap a shot. “Henri Cartier-Bresson was known for photographing the decisive moment, that moment when everything falls into place,” explained Wertheimer. “But I was more interested in the moments just before or just after the decisive moment.”
