Eleven Visionaries and One Submarine

When: Mondays-Saturdays. Continues through Jan. 22 2011
“The difference between a madman and me," Salvador Dali said, “is that I am not mad.” While plenty of art has been made exploring the line between sanity and madness, the paintings, drawings, installations, sculptures, text and video presented in Eleven Visionaries and One Submarine, the new exhibit at gallery F, have a unique curatorial bent: All of the exhibiting artists have personal experience with mental illness. From Ron Bass’ bluntly drawn “Staying Strong in Recovery” to Hans Vorbusch’s haunting double self-portrait, the works press up against the borders of insider/outsider art while also narrating some of the emotional turmoil of their creators. The opening reception will feature a music/dance performance by Megan Harrold and Charlie Rauh and professional karaoke — JJ Jones will perform pop songs requested by the artists.
