ELEL w/The Beech Benders & Explorer's Club

When: Fri., June 27, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $5
Some five years ago, pop trio Heypenny arguably sealed the deal at Road to Bonnaroo on the merit of their marching-band shtick and stage props. When that band dissolved, frontman Ben Elkins formed ELEL, which came back this year and won over the RTB audience and judges with a massive ensemble playing polished, highly danceable tunes like “Kiss Kiss” and the irresistible “40 Watt,” with not a uniform or broken TV in sight. The big band’s well-manicured kitchen-sink conglomeration orbits around electro-pop with African and Latin rhythms, and it went over pretty well down on the farm, even with a crowd still hungover from bumpin’ through the night. Later this year, ELEL will release their debut LP Geode, recorded at Elkins' house and local studio Electric Thunder. Bizarro soul-surf instrumental ensemble The Beech Benders will be on hand Friday night to guide you through a dance warmup. If this isn’t enough ELEL for ya, you’ll have another chance to catch ’em at Saturday’s season finale of East Side Hootenanny in East Park, where Oliver and the Spectacles, The Future and Magnolia Sons will also play.
