Though hed never make such a claim, its a fair statement to say that saxophonist and bandleader Rahsaan Barber is a Nashville version of Wynton Marsalis. Hes an articulate and gifted musician and soloist who doubles as the type of passionate, charismatic advocate the music desperately needs in its ongoing struggle to reach wider and younger audiences. Barbers latest role involves hosting the Nashville Jazz Workshops Contemporary Jazz Series the first Sunday of each month at the NJWs concert venue the Jazz Cave. Sundays event features the dynamite new band El Movimiento that adeptly blends hard bop, the blues and Latin rhythms. Barbers also a member of El Movimiento along with Giovannia Rodriguez and Imer Santiago. They may also preview some tunes from their forthcoming new CD.
