El Movimiento at NJW

Contemporary Jazz

Contemporary Jazz
Though he’d never make such a claim, it’s a fair statement to say that saxophonist and bandleader Rahsaan Barber is a Nashville version of Wynton Marsalis. He’s an articulate and gifted musician and soloist who doubles as the type of passionate, charismatic advocate the music desperately needs in its ongoing struggle to reach wider and younger audiences. Barber’s latest role involves hosting the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Contemporary Jazz Series the first Sunday of each month at the NJW’s concert venue the Jazz Cave. Sunday’s event features the dynamite new band El Movimiento that adeptly blends hard bop, the blues and Latin rhythms. Barber’s also a member of El Movimiento along with Giovannia Rodriguez and Imer Santiago. They may also preview some tunes from their forthcoming new CD.
