Editor’s Note

Last week, Mayor Bill Purcell tapped a new deputy mayor and, as it happens, I’m married to him. To allay the concerns of the people who may not know me or Curt, let me offer the following: I won’t assign, edit or work with reporters about any stories dealing specifically with Purcell, my husband or the mayor’s office. Either managing editor John Pitcher or another senior staffer will edit and advise reporters on such stories should these arise. I will not, however, banish myself from writing and editing commentary or stories that deal generally with local politics or government, pieces in which the mayor or the better Garrigan simply don’t figure in any real way. Examples would be covering the upcoming mayor’s race, pieces about development and growth, the Metro Council, etc. Finally, for three of the eight months that my husband will be Purcell’s No. 2, I’ll be on maternity leave, so that should make any skeptical readers feel 37 percent better already. In more interesting news, I want to announce that former Scene staffer Jeff Woods will be darkening our doors once again starting early next month, when he’ll return to the newspaper—he left in 2000—as a staff writer. Now toiling as an editor for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C., the former Banner chief political writer and hell-raiser will be covering pretty much whatever he damn well wants. Political candidates, nefarious bastards and assorted reprobates may need this next month to brace themselves. So fair warning.
