Recently featured in the Color as Field show at the Frist, Helen Frankenthaler once said a painter must "know how to use the accident." Taking a cue from one of her heroes, Edie Maney's paintings are discovered, not created. The artist uses bold colors and layers her canvases, bringing an unexpected textural dimension to her work. Seemingly employing everything from a squeegee to a pallet knife to a handy scraper, Maney introduces random possibilities into her work, pushing paint across her canvases, occasionally revealing figurative elements that are allowed to coexist with the abstract designs in her swirling, slashing surfaces.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: April 22. Continues through June 25, 2009
