Earth, Wind and Fire’s sound blended jazz’s experimental structures with funk’s propulsive rhythms and soul’s lyrical flair and sentimentality. After taking some years off, they returned to active touring and recording, and have remained vibrant and contemporary through the ’90s and into the 21st century. They have earned six Grammys and four American music awards, plus induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and an ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award. They’ve had their hits sampled by an array of hip-hop artists, among them A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Nas. The recent single-disc celebration Now, Then & Forever included a new single and remix, “Guiding Lights.” It was produced by will.i.am. in preparation for a forthcoming new studio release later this summer. Now, Then & Forever also includes favorite tunes picked by Andre 3000, Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell, Raphael Saadiq and David Foster among others. Earth, Wind and Fire will be joined by the Nashville Symphony in a special performance.
