Dylan Vs. Petty Tribute

John Wesley Hard Promises

The most recent Basement event with this same “battle of the bands” format was a little more obvious: It pitted The Beatles against The Stones. By contrast, we weren’t aware of any long-running rivalry between former tour-mates Tom Petty, the visionary “voice of a generation” who changed the face of rock music, and Bob Dylan, the man who inflicted “Joey” on a long-suffering populace. Mike Grimes et al. generally know what they’re doing, though. And the club has assembled an impressive collection of acts to pay tribute—including the Lonely Hearts (talented songwriters who play country-inflected guitar pop), Ricky Young (previously praised in the Scene for his “slacker romanticism”), Red White Blue, Jacob Jones, Heypenny and more. With their help, we’ll settle the Dylan vs. Petty debate once and for all, if indeed it ever existed.
