Dragon Music Sunday feat. The Paperhead

When: Sun., June 24, 4 p.m. 2012
Price: Free
Back when I was in college, I only knew Fannie Mae Dees Park — referred to colloquially as “Dragon Park” — as a prime loitering spot. With its copious shade trees and the tiled, serpentine statue for which it is informally named, Dragon Park was the perfect locale to sit around and … um … OK, let’s be honest. I went there to make out with my girlfriend. And I wasn’t the only one. Point is, the cozy little park is among Nashville’s lesser-known treasures, and as it turns out, it’s also the setting for the fifth annual Vanderbilt-sponsored Dragon Music Sundays. While past installments have seen performances from bluegrass, Americana and singer-songwriter acts like Jim Lauderdale and Will Kimbrough, today’s Dragon Music Sunday — the fifth and final performance of this year’s series — will feature a set from psychedelic garage-rock wunderkinds The Paperhead. We’re fans of The Paperhead around these parts — I used phrases like “a collection of day-tripping excess barely congealed in the afternoon sun,” “pleasantly loose and soupy” and “images of hazy opium dens” to describe their self-titled 2011 release. So if that sounds like something you can groove to, I’ll see you at the Dragon.
