Whether you’re the kind of music fan who thinks the near-half-dozen records Philadelphia’s indie-psyche-pop-meets-classic-rock Dr. Dog have released are great or just really, really fucking good, if you’ve seen the band play, you know there’s no denying they’re easily one of the most electrifying live acts on the planet. Dr. Dog are a classic example of a band who have elevated themselves from the status of buzzed-about indie darlings to major modern-rock players through constant touring and performances that improve in caliber as steadily as the size of the crowds they play for — evidenced by the routine house calls the docs have made to Music City. Less than five years ago, the band played to scattered handfuls in the confines of The Basement, and less than six months after drawing thousands at Live on the Green, Dr. Dog make yet their second appearance at Cannery Ballroom in one calendar year. Given the difficulty of the market, such is a feat accomplished only by greatness.
