DOUBLE A OCTET
With a 10-piece lineup, Double A Octet leaders Chris Autry and Roy Agee may be weak on math, but their chops and taste are impeccable. Autry’s résumé runs deep in R&B and country, and trombonist Agee has jazz, roots and pop cred that recently extended to Prince’s band. This time they’ll be joined by a cast of killer sidemen — including saxists Jeff Coffin, Mark Douthit and Chris West, trumpeter George Tidwell, guitarist Andy Reiss, pianist Stephen Kummer and drummer Josh Hunt, plus singer Tommy Keenum. Together, the group will evoke the lush life of the ’40 and ’50s — days when vocal giants like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald would glide over orchestrations of bandleaders like Nelson Riddle — performing a repertoire built on masterpieces like Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn’s “Come Fly With Me” and Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer’s “Come Rain or Come Shine.” While both songs are on tonight’s menu, all the Octet’s arrangements are by Autry and Agee.
