Author of original plays and adaptations (including a four-character hip-hop
Othello), anthologized dramas and educational teleplays, Y York is the creator of works that have been presented in New York, Houston, Seattle and also Milwaukee, where this inspirational piece made its staged debut following a reading at the 2010 Kennedy Center New Visions/New Voices Festival. In a fictionalized setting, York recounts the true story of collage artist Della Wells, who spent much of her young life longing to soar creatively beyond her parents’ modest aspirations for her. The Nashville Children’s Theatre cast features Jessica Kuende as Tonia (the Wells character), plus Bralyn Stokes, David Chattam, Aleta Myles and Alicia Haymer. On Feb. 2, the artist herself will be in Music City to participate in a Q&A about the play and her work, some of which will be on display in the NCT lobby. In addition, the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission will host an exhibit of Wells’ art through March 1 on the fourth floor of the Metro Office Building (800 Second Ave. S.). Finally, a special artist reception with Ms. Wells — open to the public — will be held at Metro Arts Gallery on Feb. 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. J
