Deven Allman's Honeytribe at 12th & Porter

Ramblin' Son

Ramblin' Son
Yes, he’s Gregg Allman’s son. Yes, he, too, leads his band (Honeytribe) through riffing, jamming corridors of Southern boogie and blues-rock. But Devon Allman goes his own way when it comes to his instrument—guitar, not keyboards like his dad—and how he plays it—with some of Santana’s searing, note-bending melodies and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s aggressive attack, and none of the slide-playing his old man’s past and present bandmates are known for. As if to drive home his artistic autonomy in a more subliminal fashion, the younger Allman recently streamlined his St. Louis-based Honeytribe, eliminating keyboards altogether. The organ-stoked quartet heard on the band’s high-powered 2006 debut, Torch, has slimmed down to a power trio. And that’s something in itself: When else have you ever seen an Allman surrounded by that few musicians on stage?
