The movie: a silent 1920 German-expressionist horror yarn culled from the pages of Yiddish folklore. The soundtrack: four Irish guys and a shitload of sequencers. The result: not so easy to predict. Shortly after the dawn of cinema, the Prussian actor/director Paul Wegener carved a career niche as the clay avenger summoned by a rabbi's sorcery to protect the Jews of Prague, with unforeseen consequences. Speaking of the unforeseen, we bet the big guy never imagined he'd be walking with his arms outstretched to "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?" But it beats another round of Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz--although our dream match-up of The Birth of a Nation and Fear of a Black Planet remains sadly unrealized. Free and open to the public as part of the Lenten Film Series, preceded at 6 p.m. by a free light supper.
