Along with their anticipated show of Chuck Close prints, the Frist will also be opening a new exhibit of large collage paintings by Dean Byington. Terra Incognita features a collection of new images that pair nicely with the Close show. Where Close's paintings disintegrate into beautiful, elemental cells upon close inspection, Byington's deeply rendered works--which include collage, drawing, screen print and painting--offer a revelation to the inquisitive viewer as his abstract image-scapes break into strange narratives roiling with plants, anthropomorphic animals, antique, man-made structures and topographies of fantastic countrysides that leave the viewer feeling like they're looking upon an alien landscape from a vantage point in some strange sky. Byington will help visitors find their bearings with an Artists Forum talk at noon. Lecture audience meets at the Frist Information Desk.
