David Kenton Kring: Head Case

When: Sat., April 19 2014
I’ve always considered Julia Martin to be a pretty singular artist — her sweet but not saccharine figurative paintings are pretty enough to hang on your bedroom wall, yet intelligent enough to hold their own in a fine art gallery. But the artists Martin’s invited into her new space on Wedgewood-Houston’s Humphreys Street strike a similar balance — last month’s Megan Kimber exhibit had a spooky, Kiki Smith-lite vibe, and David Kenton Kring, a Kentucky-based ceramicist, makes work that is equal measures Will Vinton playful and Chapman Brothers sick. If you’re into accessible art that you won’t feel embarrassed for embracing, this show will be right up your alley. LAURA HUTSON
