David Douglas’ multimedia panels finds dreamtime subjects that land betwixt and between the worlds of painting and photography. The artist brings a surreal sense of the otherworldly to his everyday subject matter — he shoots his large photographic still lifes, interiors and landscapes in digital black-and-white, and manipulates them to enhance their haunted sensibilities. Then — like a painter — Douglas attacks the surfaces of his images to create additional textures and lines before he mounts the pieces to boards and seals them in painterly patinas of layered encaustic wax. Douglas’ work is pretty dramatic stuff, and it’s no coincidence that tonight’s one-man-show also serves as an introduction to Gallery One’s new owner Tammy Parmentier. Tonight’s opening reception will kick off with a gallery talk from Douglas.
