David Olney Album Release Party feat. R.B. Morris

When: Wed., July 9, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
Among all the singing and songwriting types depicted in the show Nashville — several varieties of emotionally vulnerable confessors and intimately knowing biographers, along with the sporadic source of feisty, personality-driven fare — there is nobody remotely resembling David Olney, who’s been a fixture in this town’s working songwriter scene for the past four decades, and who actually had his song “Postcard From Mexico” make the show’s soundtrack during the first season. Could be the script writers lack the imagination to incarnate and nourish character-hopper like him. Olney had a long stint on stalwart folk label Rounder and its Philo imprint, but he’s long since settled into independent territory, where he has complete and total freedom to follow his idiosyncratic, occasionally Shakespearean storytelling muse. On his latest, When the Deal Goes Down, it leads him from noble balladeer territory (“Soldier of Misfortune”) to that of a dog-eared roots-rocker (“Roll This Stone”), a suave, swinging scriptural narrator (“Servant, Job”) and lots else. As usual, heady stuff. JEWLY HIGHT
