In their mixtape track “Hahahaha jk?” Das Racist don’t give listeners the satisfaction of hearing them definitively say they’re either joking or they’re not. And the three guys in the buzzed-about, multiracial Brooklyn hip-hop outfit — MCs Heems and Kool AD, and hypeman Dapwell — haven’t been much more straightforward in interviews when it comes to talking about their intentions. But it hardly matters how serious they are or aren’t, because they also happen to be talented, funny and insanely sharp, and they bring fresh insider-outsider points-of-view to the table. Even “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” — a ridiculously dumb track they released a few years back — is the sort of thing that gets lodged in your brain. Elsewhere on last year’s Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man mixtapes and this year’s formal full-length debut Relax, they deconstruct and reconstruct hip-hop attitude, language, rhyme scheme, 21st century racial consciousness and impressively random pop culture references into seriously memorable stuff.
