Darrell Scott Band at Station Inn

Darrell Scott is one of those Nashville musical polyglots. He’s written country hits for Travis Tritt and the Dixie Chicks (as well as a bona fide country/bluegrass classic, “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive”); picked the banjo with Steve Earle’s Bluegrass Dukes; and, most recently, released a nifty collection of covers (Modern Hymns) made with roots music all-stars such as Alison Krauss and Del McCoury. The lineup of Scott’s band changes from time to time, but its quality never varies: this one’s a dandy, featuring slinky and solid bassist (and sometimes cellist) Davies, coolly inventive mandolin player Flinner, and fiddler Shad Cobb, who ought to be declared a national treasure for his sweet yet robust tone and distinctively slanted approach to melodic variation. In short, it’s a band led by a singer-songwriter who’s liable to ask them to do just about anything—and they can do it.
