Dailey and Vincent w/The SteelDrivers at Bluegrass Nights

This year’s summer bluegrass series closes out with a double bill that neatly illustrates at least one dimension of the genre’s breadth these days. Dailey & Vincent’s music is polished to a high gloss on their recent sophomore release, Brothers From Different Mothers (Rounder), and zeroes in on razor-sharp harmonies that almost always feature Jamie Dailey’s high, clear tenor. The SteelDrivers, hard at work on their own second disc for Rounder, focus with equal intensity on Chris Stapleton’s rough drawl. But there’s plenty of high-octane and finely wrought picking either way, and set lists filled with excellent songs—indeed, were it not for the latter’s propensity to write dark, the odds are pretty fair that his name would have already appeared among the former’s songwriter credits. As it is, the show serves up two sides of a bluegrass coin about as clearly—and as well—as the job can be done.
