Cult Fiction Underground: Silent Night, Deadly Night
When the “Santa’s got an ax!” kill-o-rama Silent Night, Deadly Night was originally released in 1984, you would have thought that someone had declared war on Christmas. The national PTA campaigned to have the film banned from theaters, and Siskel and Ebert, in a notorious bit of pompous theatricality, actually read the film’s production credits on their TV show At the Movies, while chanting “Shame, shame!” after each name. Twenty-eight years later, it’s considered a Christmas classic for horror fans, and has inspired four progressively campy sequels, and even a fancy remake that’s in theaters right now. But here’s your chance to see the original in a theater, as audiences were only able to do for a couple of weeks before the movie was pulled from distribution. (It was later re-released in 1986.)
