Cult Fiction Underground: Mr. Vampire

When director Ricky Lau’s Mr. Vampire was originally released in 1985, the Hong Kong film industry was in the middle of a renaissance. The movies pouring out of Hong Kong were wilder, crazier and more spectacular than just about anything seen up to that time — all that was needed was hopping vampires. And Mr. Vampire delivered in spades, with moments of genuine creepiness, slapstick comedy, spectacular martial arts and a career-making performance by chop-socky veteran actor and martial artist Lam Ching Ying as the “One-Eyebrow Priest.” The movie was such a hit that it inspired a dozen official and unofficial sequels, as well as an entire genre of martial arts comedy-horror films. So grab a bag of sticky rice (the garlic equivalent for Chinese blood-suckers) and forget trying to run, because Mr. Vampire can always hop faster!
