Cornpone Pastiche

A Brooklyn septet who play mid-’60s country music for laughs, The Defibulators hide solid musicianship and funny lyrics in a clatter that features sound effects and distracted vocals. Their new full-length Corn Money sounds like it was recorded both for and from AM radio, and it works best when these pranksters play it relatively straight. “Get What's Coming” finds singer Erin Bru wondering who stole her cherry pie, while "Dum-Dum" evokes The Byrds circa 1966. “If I was a crawdad in your office / Well, I'd search around for words / And keep water in mind," they sing. The pastiche is expert: “The Gravy Shake” suggests The Mar-Keys jamming with The Buckaroos, and the amazing “Go-Go Truck” pays loving tribute to Dave Dudley.
