Cooley's Business Card Jamboree "Best Ever"

Deputy governor gives out 2,500 cards

Dave Cooley, the deputy governor who has been a political aide at Gov. Phil Bredesen's side for more than a decade, loves to network with state employees. He's known for jovially handing out his business card to every state employee he meets, often with a hearty thanks for a job well done and an invitation to call him any time.

And for the past three years, in case any state employee hasn't had the chance to meet Cooley and obtain one of the tiny, tastefully embossed cards, the deputy governor has hosted an event to give them away.

"I'm proud to be a Tennessee employee, and I want all employees to know that any time they need me, I'm here for them," he explains.

Last week's third annual "Dave Cooley's Business Card Distribution Jamboree" saw Cooley hand out more than 2,500 cards in three hours, as state employees from all departments poured through the Capitol.

Stories of employees who had used the cards when they were in a jam could be heard all around.

"Once when it was a rainy night and I had forgotten to pick up some milk on the way home, I called Dave Cooley and he was at my door with a gallon in no time," said TennCare staffer Edna Whipple as she waited in line to have her photo made with Cooley.

"Dave just loves to give his card to us troopers," state trooper Jim Scroggins said with a big smile, tucking Cooley's card into the shirt pocket of his uniform. "He goes way out of his way to tell us how much he appreciates a job well done—and we respond to that. That Dave, he's something."

"This was the best ever year for the jamboree, but, I'll tell you, I'm a little tired," Cooley said when the last of the card-bearing employees had left the Capitol. "Maybe next year I'll just drop the cards out of a helicopter."
