Colour Me Bad

As a gruff Southern rock quintet formed from Oxford, Miss., college pups gigging their way out from the indie undertow, Colour Revolt have fought tooth and nail for every inch of their critical favor. From dodging Hurricane Katrina during the recording of their '05 self-titled EP to being named (perhaps a tad sportively) "Best New Band from Mississipi" by Boston pub The Phoenix following this year's proper debut Plunder, Beg and Curse, this is one band for whom the stars are slowly aligning. Though prone to falling into stereotypes—fronting woozy rhythm guitar and seething drum rolls to round out frontman Jesse Coppenbarger's all-too-familiar howling vocals—Colour Revolt assuredly carry their own weight and remain a tightly poised indie outfit despite all their on-the-sleeve derivations.
