Coldplay at Sommet Center

You Too?

You Too?
In all honesty, we have mixed feelings about Coldplay. Their 2000 release Parachutes was a damn fine record, brimming with thoughtful songwriting and a few tracks that admittedly tugged at our heartstrings in just the right way. But then they kept making the same record. Again and again. And that wouldn’t be so bad—that is, if it weren’t a U2 album they were reproducing. Having caught them at the Ryman in early 2003, however, we can tell you that they put on an impressive show, and they’re grateful to their fans and in awe of their monolithic Britpop predecessors. Plus Chris Martin’s cameo in a 2007 episode of Ricky Gervais’ brilliant sit-com Extras proved that the rock star could poke fun at himself, and that makes him OK in our book. Even though Joe Satriani and Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf Islam) both claimed that Coldplay ripped them off with last year’s single, “Viva la Vida.” True story.
