Michael McFaden’s locally developed musical Ain’t We Got Fun played Nashville in 2005 and later road-tripped it to the Big Apple for a series of festival performances. The creator returns with a staged reading of his new light opera, set in the Spiritualist community of Lily Dale, N.Y. The story follows Molly, a young widow, as she searches for a medium to help her contact her recently deceased husband. Her quest brings her into contact with spirit painters, suffragettes, skeptics and a psychic researcher. Stephanie Benton and L.T. Kirk lead the cast of 17, which also includes Kay Ayers, Steve Mogck, Chris Mitchell and Susan Dupont. For the score, McFaden drew upon some lesser-known compositions of Sir Arthur Sullivan and added his own original lyrics, fashioned in the style of Sullivan’s famous collaborator, W.S. Gilbert. McFaden directs, and the musical direction is by Lee Druce.
