As part of the six-week bluegrass concert series at the Ryman, Chris Thile of the Punch Brothers and Michael Daves of Nickel Creek will play from their collaborative album Sleep With One Eye Open. While my brain automatically wants to insert the phrase “GRIPPING YOUR PILLOW TIGHT!” after the album title, the wunderkind-bluegrass shred-fest of those two worlds colliding nullifies any of my brain’s attempts to remember Metallica lyrics. Despite pumping out traditional tunes from legends like Flatt & Scruggs and Bill Monroe, Thile and Daves will undoubtedly wiggle in more than a few progressive breakneck mandolin jams to supplement the high-lonesome cries of bluegrass past. The duo also put out a snazzy 7-inch that was produced at Third Man Records. The Boxcars, a five-piece contemporary bluegrass assemblage made up of members from Union Station, Blue Moon Rising and The Isaacs, add their refined licks and unmistakable croon to the lineup for a night that even “Enter Sandman” can’t ruin.
