After a three-year run with his own Larry Sanders-like showbiz-funhouse vehicle (Showtimes The Chris Isaak Show), not to mention intermittent gigs as part of Jonathan Demmes repertory company, Isaak couldve quit music and parlayed his Chet Baker pretty-boy-pugilist looks into a cushy acting career with no troublewitness his steamy clinches in the David Lynch-directed Wicked Game video. But his live shows provide a platform for all his skillsnot just his sneaky dry humor and comic flair, but also his unexpected heat as a slow-burning rocker (and the chill-raising Roy Orbison croon that won him a cult following on arrival almost 25 years ago). His new album Mr. Lucky sounds broadcast from some reverb-drenched lovers grotto, cavernous and sticky with damp heat, while duet partners Trisha Yearwood and Michelle Branch entwine their voices with his like interlaced fingers.
