By her own estimates, artist and teacher Gail McDaniel has raised around $74,000 for public education since 2001 with her “Chase Away the Blahs” events. A partnership with the PENCIL foundation — a Nashville nonprofit that helps local students and teachers — McDaniel’s annual fundraiser helps provide grant money and school supplies by auctioning off a variety of prizes, this year ranging from a weeklong vacation anywhere in the world to a private performance by songwriter Kenny Durham. “Many schools in our area face fiscal challenges,” McDaniel says. “This is a wonderful opportunity for arts supporters to invest in the future artists of America.” We’re inclined to agree.
