A hand-carved hippo toilet seat and a hand-painted monkey swing are up for bid at the annual chair auction benefiting Kids on the Block. The nonprofit organization uses puppetry in the classroom to tackle tough issues such as child abuse and bullying, but the annual party is one of the most whimsically creative events in town, in which generous artists turn their imaginations to the infinite interpretations of chairs. An Eames-style molded plastic chair painted with a sci-fi landscape, a wooden library chair decoupaged with vibrant flowers and hand-crafted iron furniture will all be on the block and in the silent auction. When artist Jennifer Lightsey's hippo potty comes up for bid, either get out your checkbook or get out of the way. It may be a charity event, but things could get competitive over something so humorously designed and exquisitely crafted.
