Carll's Marks

The honky-tonk album-closer “She Left Me For Jesus” on Hayes Carll’s latest, Trouble In Mind, is about as good as country novelty songs get: It’s witty, pokerfaced, musically sturdy and needs no hokey sound effects to make its point. Plus, it won Americana Music Association Song of the Year a few months back and earned Carll something no other country act is likely to have: a tour sponsorship from The Onion. The song’s video is a spoof on Cheaters, complete with a distraught lover and a film crew spying from the bushes (Carll plays the role of boom operator). Jokes aside, you won’t find a more convincing, hard Texas country singer and songwriter than Carll in this generation.
