A prime example of a double bill that looks great on posters, rolls right off the tongue, and appears to make perfect sense, the pairing of Passion Pit and Future Islands nonetheless underscores some fundamental differences between the two bands. While both incorporate synthesizers in unorthodox approaches to pop songwriting, Passion Pit’s commercialism is on full display via its deal with Sony and the proliferation of its songs on various TV shows and commercials. It’s telling that the two leadoff singles from the band’s forthcoming sophomore album Gossamer also happen to be the album’s first two songs. The Cambridge, Mass., quintet’s current bio makes unabashed reference to frontman Michael Angelakos’s mental breakdown around the time of the band’s initial success, but Passion Pit’s subtler aspects gleam all the brighter when considered side by side with Future Islands’ more pointedly challenging sound. In both cases, art disguises itself as pop and vice-versa.
