Cadillac Sky at Station Inn

Sporting a new member in guitarist/singer David Mayfield, C-Sky are arguably the foremost exponent today of “newgrass,” a more-often-maligned-than-heard variant of bluegrass that has its roots in the early 70s. Yet while the group’s been known to jam out for extended periods, they’ve proven themselves able to keep even some pretty conservative bluegrass festival audiences engrossed, thanks to sharp songwriting—most of it by mandolinist/vocalist Bryan Simpson, who’s scored some pretty high-profile country cuts—along with undeniable chops and a boatload of onstage charm. Look for a focus on songs from last spring’s stunning and complex Gravity’s Our Enemy, but look for some new ones, too; if anyone in bluegrass is a moving target, it’s these guys.
