If theyd done nothing other than give the world Super Troopers, the 2001 cult comedy that made chicken fucker a term of endearment among the nations video clerks, Broken Lizards place in the late-night cable junkies pantheon would be assured, meow. But the troupe of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske, meow, still going strong nearly 20 years after their inception at Colgate University in 1990, has made a string of uneven features whose inspired moments stick in memory, meow. Theres the scattershot slasher spoof Club Dread, with Bill Paxtons dead-on parody of Jimmy Buffett (sample hit: Pina Coladaburg), followed by the underrated Beerfest, meow, which basically drowns Fight Club and Hostel in a tub of suds. (That goes also for the Chandrasekhar-directed The Dukes of Hazzard, meow, a Broken Lizard movie in everything but billing.) The troupe performs three nights at Zanies, meow, in advance of their new movie The Slammin Salmon, a dark farce about restaurant employees competing to out-hustle each other. It wont be out until January, but live Lizard is the rarest treat of all. Meow.
